Why do website quotes vary so much?

Two quotes for “a website” can describe very different jobs. These are the things that move the price most:

  • Number of pages and how much content you already have. Writing and organizing content is often more work than the design.
  • Selling online. A store needs products, payments, shipping, tax settings and testing.
  • Bookings, member areas and integrations with other software.
  • Custom design versus adapting a well-built theme.
  • What happens after launch. Some quotes include hosting, updates and support; others stop on launch day.

When comparing quotes, check that they describe the same scope before comparing the totals.

Why do hourly rates differ between freelancers and agencies?

An agency rate covers more than one person’s time. It usually includes project management, design, development and testing, plus the firm’s overheads. For context, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median pay of employed web developers and digital designers at $47.85 an hour (May 2025). That is an employee’s pay before a firm’s overheads, not what a client is billed. A lower hourly rate isn’t always cheaper overall. What matters is the total for the finished scope, which is why we quote a fixed price instead of billing hours.

What are the ongoing costs after launch?

A website has running costs, whoever builds it:

  • Domain name: renews every year, usually in your own registrar account.
  • Hosting: from a few dollars a month on shared hosting to $29 a month for our managed WordPress hosting, which includes updates and backups.
  • Paid plugins or apps: some features, like advanced forms or bookings, carry a yearly licence.
  • Builder subscriptions: on a DIY builder, the plan itself is the ongoing cost, and it rises with features.

Ask any provider to list these in writing before you sign.

How should you compare website quotes?

Use the same short checklist for every quote you get:

  1. Is the price fixed, or an estimate that can grow with hours?
  2. Who owns the site, the domain and the logins when the project ends?
  3. What is included after launch, and what does it cost each month?
  4. Is accessibility checked against WCAG 2.1 AA?
  5. Can you edit the site yourself, and is training included?

Clear answers to these tell you more than the headline price. If you’d like ours, request a free quote or start with a free audit of your current site.

Common questions

How much does a small business website cost in Grand Rapids?

Most small business websites built by a professional cost under $10,000, and agency-built custom sites typically run $5,000 to $20,000. A DIY builder plan costs about $17 to $160 a month plus your own time. No public survey breaks prices out for Grand Rapids alone, so national figures from Clutch and DesignRush are the best published guide.

Why doesn't 45Squared publish a price for a new website?

Because a five-page brochure site and a 60-product online store are different jobs, and one listed number would mislead one of them. We publish what we can, which is $29 a month hosting and migrations from $1,500. For new builds we have a short call and then send one fixed price in writing, with the scope and a launch date.

Is a DIY website builder cheaper than a WordPress site?

In year one, usually yes. Over several years, often not. Builder plans renew every year, cost more as you add selling or booking features, and you can’t take the site with you if you leave. A WordPress site has no software fee. You pay for hosting and any upkeep you choose, and you own the site outright.
